Not every 800 x 1200 mm pallet is a genuine EUR pallet. A genuine pallet that meets the standard can be identified by its burnt-in markings, and it is worth learning to read them. A genuine EUR pallet withstands the stated load, is accepted in the pallet exchange system and can be used for export, whereas an unknown imitation can fail or be stopped at the border. Here we go through the markings that identify a genuine pallet and the signs that give away a poor one.
What are the EUR pallet and EPAL?
The EUR pallet, also known as the euro pallet, is an internationally standardised pallet measuring 800 x 1200 mm with a height of 144 mm. Thanks to its dimensions and construction, it fits the same forklifts, racking and transport throughout Europe. It is precisely this compatibility that makes it the basic pallet of logistics.
EPAL (European Pallet Association) is the organisation that administers the exchange system for euro pallets and makes sure that genuine pallets meet the standard. When a pallet carries the official EPAL and EUR markings, it has been made and inspected to the standard and can be exchanged pallet for pallet with other operators. You can find more about the EUR pallet on the EUR pallet page.
Markings on a genuine EUR pallet and where to find them
The official markings are burnt into the wood of the pallet’s corner blocks (feet). They are not stickers or prints but permanent brand marks. You will find these on a genuine pallet:
- EUR stamp inside an oval. Shows that the pallet complies with the euro pallet standard.
- EPAL stamp inside an oval. Shows that the pallet belongs to the pallet exchange system supervised by EPAL.
- Manufacturer’s marking. Identifies the pallet’s manufacturer and production details, which guarantees traceability.
- IPPC stamp when the pallet has been heat-treated for export. More on this below.
Why does a pallet have both a EUR and an EPAL stamp?
Many people wonder why the same pallet carries two different stamps. The reason is historical. The EUR stamp dates back to the early days of the European pallet system, when pallets were managed as part of railway logistics. EPAL, the European Pallet Association, came later to supervise pallet quality and the exchange system.
In practice, a genuine EUR pallet often shows both stamps, and both say the same thing: the pallet has been made to the standard and is accepted for exchange. What matters to the buyer is not the history of the stamps but that they are genuine, burnt into the wood and clearly legible. If either stamp is missing or unclear, it is worth verifying the pallet’s authenticity before buying.
FIN pallet marking
In Finland, the FIN pallet is also used. It measures 1000 x 1200 mm, which makes it slightly larger than the EUR pallet. A FIN pallet is identified by its FIN stamp, which shows that the pallet complies with the Finnish standard. The same principle applies: the stamp on a genuine pallet is clear and permanent. We explain the differences between the pallet types in the article what is the difference between EUR and FIN pallets, and more about the FIN pallet is on the FIN pallet page.
IPPC stamp and export (ISPM 15)
When goods are exported outside the EU, wooden pallets must be heat-treated. In heat treatment, the wood is heated right through to at least 56 °C, which destroys any pests. A treated pallet carries an IPPC stamp, which proves the treatment and meets the requirements of the international ISPM 15 standard. The stamp shows the treatment method and the producer’s details.
Without an IPPC stamp, an export shipment can be held up at the border, so exporters should check the marking before shipping. The article heat-treated pallets and ISPM 15 covers the topic in full.
How to tell a genuine pallet from a fake
A genuine EUR pallet stands up to inspection. Go through these points and you will know what you are buying:
- The markings are burnt into the wood, not printed on a sticker or painted.
- Both the EUR and EPAL stamps are present and clearly legible.
- The manufacturer’s marking is in place.
- The dimensions are exactly 800 x 1200 mm.
- The construction meets the standard: nine sturdy blocks and intact boards.
- The wood is of good quality, the nails are in place and the pallet is not warped.
- An export pallet also has an IPPC stamp.
Genuine EUR pallet
- Burnt-in EUR and EPAL stamps
- Manufacturer’s marking
- Correct dimensions and standard construction
- Accepted for exchange and export
Suspicious pallet
- Stamps missing or unclear
- Marking on a sticker or in paint
- Wrong size or weak construction
- Loose nails, warped frame
Buying a used EUR pallet
A used EUR pallet is a perfectly usable and affordable choice, as long as it is genuine and in good condition. So check two things at the same time: are the official markings there, and is the pallet structurally intact? Burnt-in stamps stay legible even after heavy use, and the standard construction stays the same throughout the pallet’s life.
If the stamps have disappeared completely or the pallet is badly damaged, its exchange value and load capacity suffer. The pallet is then no longer accepted for exchange, and you cannot fully rely on it to carry a load. We explain how to check the condition of used pallets in more detail in the article what to check before buying a used pallet, and you can see our range on the used pallets page.
Why does authenticity matter?
Choosing a genuine pallet is not a minor detail. It affects three things:
- Load capacity and safety. A EUR pallet that meets the standard withstands about 1500 kg while being moved. There is no guarantee of the load capacity of an unknown imitation, which is a risk to the load and to workplace safety.
- Exchangeability. Only a genuine, marked pallet can be exchanged in the pallet exchange system. An imitation is not accepted, so it becomes a cost item.
- Suitability for export. Without an IPPC stamp, the pallet cannot be used for export outside the EU.
